January 2020 was National One Health Awareness Month

January 2020 was designated as National One Health Awareness Month by a bipartisan resolution that recognizes the importance of a collaborative, interdisciplinary—One Health—approach so we might find solutions to the public health, environmental, and conservation challenges of the 21st century. In this blog, I have put my 31 daily social media posts for this month. It is my hope that in one long chain, we see the common threats, many taken straight out of current affairs, from climate change and mental health issues to pandemics preparedness and prevention. And, more importantly we see some of the amazing work being done globally to strive for healthy people, healthy animals, and healthy environments. I hope you enjoy learning about One Health.

Day 2 is on Zoonotic Diseases. #OneHealth is about #Zoonotic #Diseases which are infectious diseases shared between human and non-human animals. Our 2018 publication http://rdcu.be/FqQx on great apes reminds us of the bi-directional nature of this link! http://www.drsharondeem.com/blog//an-inconvenient-truth-zoonotic-pathogens

Day 3 is on Climate change and animal, human, environmental health. This picture from Australia shared on @billmckibben is worth a 1000 words of #ClimateChange impacts on the health of #humans #animals and the #environment. This is one reason why we need a #OneHealth approach

Day 7, I decided to do a take two on climate change. With obvious costs from #Climatechange to the health of humans, animals, and environments, we need a #OneHealth approach. An action you can take is to join @ZoosVictoria and help their #veterinary staff help #wildlife https://www.zoo.org.au/fire-fund/

Day 8 is on Climate Change and Food Security. Two of the biggest #OneHealth challenges are #ClimateChange and #FoodSecurity Reasons we @stlzoo Institute for #ConservationMedicine are working on #camel #health issues in #Kenya with @ericfevre @ILRI and @mpalalive collaborators . https://www.stlzoo.org/conservation/institute-for-conservation-medicine/dromedary-camels-project

nine.jpg

Day 9 is on #comparative #medicine. #humans #animals and even #plants may share #diseases. Our work on #EDCs in #turtles answer some big questions on how #plastics may impact #reproduction and #fitness across #species. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOXNhMzO6DM

 Day 10 - we share organizations working towards #animal #human #environmental #health. @stlzoo does! https://www.stlzoo.org/conservation/institute-for-conservation-medicine

Day 11 since the first #canary in a coalmine to a sea turtle I met years ago in Central #Africa to the 1 billion animals lost in the recent #AustrailianBushfires, #animals are #sentinels for the #health of #humans #animals and #environements #One Health

Day 12 - Using our species’ innate love of life - #Biophilia – we may find solutions to the chronic non-communicable diseases, such as #obesity, #depression, and #cardiac #disease just by connecting people with nature! #OneHealth

Day 13 is on Food Security.  How do we safely feed a #human population fast approaching 8 billion while being humane to other #animals , and without harming the #environment ?  #FoodSecurity is a #OneHealth issue

fourteen.JPG

Day 14 is on Food Safety. Did you know? 1 of 6 Americans will have at least 1 episode of food-borne illness this year. If you live in the US, the food you eat today may come from over 20 different countries. The dinner table reminds us of #OneHealth . #FoodSafety takes a village!

Day 15 human encroaching on wildlife and loss of biodiversity. As #humans increasingly encroach into wildlife areas, the #LossOfBiodiversity also increases. 3 species every hour of every day go #extinct - This threatens the #health of all life - #OneHealth

Day 16 One Health One Welfare One Planet - It is simple, we have One #Earth, we share #OneHealth and we need one #welfare @OIEAnimalhealth

sixteen.jpg

Day 17 is #PublicHealth benefits of the #Human #Animal Bond. Animals make us happy!

kotto charlie germaine (1).jpg

Day 18 reminds us of the link between #animal abuse and #human abuse.

eighteen.jpg

Day 19 is all about #Soil #health. Without healthy soils, no #plants #animals or #humans have healthy foods #OneHealth - Thanks @USDA_NRCS for the reminder!

Day 20 asks us to think about the safety of #humans working with #animals. Top on my list is #mental #health issues facing #veterinarians and the need for #prevention https://time.com/5670965/veterinarian-suicide-help/

tweenty.jpg

Day 21 is plastics in the environment. When we in the United States use an estimated 500 million plastic straws each day, we know there must be #Health impacts on #animals #humans and #ecosystems #strawsSUCK

tweentyone.jpg

Day 22 our link to #wildlife – in the age of the #Anthropocene #humans create #conservation and #publichealth health challenges. #Biodiversity loss connected to loss of #planetary-health

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/oct/30/humanity-wiped-out-animals-since-1970-major-report-finds

tweentytwo.jpg

Day 23 is economic benefits of using a One Health approach. Did we learn from the 2003 #SARS #zoonotic #pathogen cost of 40 – 80 billion US$ to #Global Market? What will #Wuhun #virus cost in lives, livelihoods and economies?

https://www.businessinsider.com/wuhan-virus-economy-impact-based-on-past-outbreaks-2020-1

tweentythree.jpg

Day 24 is to share #success stories. The work we do @Stlzoo https://www.stlzoo.org/conservation/institute-for-conservation-medicine advances #wildlife #conservation #publichealth and #ecosystem health is our success story!

tweentyfour.jpg

Day 25 is on K-12 Education. With projects like our https://www.stlzoo.org/conservation/institute-for-conservation-medicine/box-turtle-project that teach #animal #human #ecosystem #health in an engaging fashion, #nextgen OneHealth practitioners will be ready!

Day 26 is all about personal stories. As a #zoo and #wildlife #veterinarian, I work for the #conservation of #endangered #species. However, I have always appreciated the connection between #animal, #environmental and #human #health.

Day 27 is on disaster preparedness and emergency response. Obvious necessities from #Australian #wildfires #biodiversity loss to #coronavirus #wet-markets #pandemic potential. However, #preventive #medicine is even better!

Day 28. The growing human footprint = landscape changes and #health threats to #animals, #humans #environments. Happy to collaborate with Bolivian colleagues to help rescue river #dolphins https://www.stlzoo.org/about/blog/2019/03/12/bolivian-river-dolphin-rescue
